The International Thespian Society (ITS), or "Thespians" for short, is the Educational Theatre Association's honorary organization. ITS recognizes the achievements of high school and middle school theatre students. Since 1929, EdTA has inducted more than 2 million Thespians into ITS. That number continues to grow, with more than 36,000 students from around the country inducted each year.

Who are Thespians?

Thespian troupes include students in grades 9-12. Thespians are honor students who have dedicated themselves to theatre, whether on-stage or behind the curtain, and who seek to obtain a better mastery of the theatre arts.

What do the SHS Thespians do?

The Sehome Thespian Troupe #4614 was chartered in 1989 and has supported the endeavors of students who appreciate and participate in theater at Sehome ever since. The SHS Thespians have competed in Individual Events at the regional, state and national level and continue to attend and compete in the Washington State Thespian Festival yearly. They also host and attend local theater events throughout the year. Previous events include: The 24-Hour Play Festival, a drama day camp for elementary students, volunteering at local elementary schools, field trips and other fundraising projects to support the drama program. The troupe meets periodically throughout the year.

How can I join Thespian Troupe #4614?

Membership is granted for the performance of meritorious work in theatre arts at Sehome High School. Students earn Thespian Points for notable contribution to the theatre arts program through participation in Sehome Drama events and mainstage productions. After accumulating 10 points, students are invited for initiation.

What are ITS officer elections?

Each year, troupe #4614 elects student leaders to guide the focus of that year's projects. Positions as ITS President, Vice President and PR Officer are available as well as well as General Officer positions. All initiated thespians can run and vote in the ITS elections which are held every spring. Initiated thespians may also choose to run for a State Thespian Officer position or (STO). STOs travel all over Washington State and assist with planning the State ITS Festival. STO elections are held each year at State.

Do I have to be a Thespian to be involved in theatre at Sehome?

You do not have to be a Thespian to be involved in theatre at Sehome. Anyone can take a drama class, and everyone is encouraged to audition for roles or work in a technical role for the mainstage plays. Being involved in theatre and the arts is a valuable experience and lots of fun!

I want to be a Thespian but being on stage isn't my thing!

No probelm! Theatre Tech students can also be Thespians. You can compete in events as a designer, stage technician or stage manager. You can also gain Thespian points by working as member of the stage crew for mainstage productions and other drama events. Find out more about tech crew here.

Each year, Troupe #4614 participates in ITS Competitions in acting, music and technical theatre.
